Counseling Psychology—PhD

The Doctor of Philosophy Counseling Psychology program has an internationally diverse student body and faculty. This program prepares students for the multi-faceted role of the professional psychologist, which allows them to work in a variety of settings including: academia, clinical, consultation, churches, businesses and private practice. It is the intent of the program to prepare graduates for licensure as professional psychologists in the U.S. and with eligibility to practice internationally.

PROGRAM LENGTH

The program consists of 106+ credits, with individualized course plans based on each student's needs.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

The PHD Counseling Psychology program only admits new students for Fall Semester.

Applicants must participate in one of the scheduled interview days during the months of January–May. 

POINTS OF DISTINCTION

  • Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.
  • Accredited by American Psychological Association.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s degree (or non-U.S. equivalent) in counseling or related field from an accredited institution and a minimum graduate GPA of 3.30 (applicants with lower GPA may be admitted upon consideration of the composite profile).
  • Students with a bachelors degree in psychology or a related field and an undergraduate GPA of 3.00 may be eligible to apply. GRE Psychology Subject Test is required for these students in addition to the GRE General Test.
  • Three recommendations from professionals such as advisors, major professors, and employers.
  • Resume describing employment, research or special projects.
  • GRE General Test from exam taken within five years.
  • Statement of Purpose reflecting your philosophical perspective, personal, professional and academic goals, and reasons for seeking the graduate program.
  • Writing Sample giving evidence of the applicant’s ability to carry out and present research. 
  • TOEFL, IELTS or PTE (academic): Students whose language of education is not English must submit English proficiency test scores.
